Liberia YMCA Celebrates 136 Years
The Liberia YMCA on Thursday, August 10, 2017, celebrated 136 years of existence as a national movement. The celebration also coincided with the launch of the Monrovia YMCA Children Vacation Sports program.
The Liberia YMCA was founded in 1881 by Bishop Samuel D. Ferguson an Episcopalian Bishop, while on assignment in Harper, Maryland County.
The celebration began with a parade on Broad Street, followed by an indoor program in the gymnasium of the Liberia YMCA. Speaking during the program, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Monrovia YMCA, Judge James Jones said the dream of the founder of the Liberia YMCA has been realized.
He said this was so because a large number of people who have impacted Liberia passed through the YMCA.
The dream of Bishop Fergurson has been realized, because many people who have made significance to Liberia and the world have had connection with the YMCA, and we are happy to see people like you.”He told the gathering.
The Monrovia YMCA Board Chairman said the 2017 launch of the Children Vacation Sports Program along with the celebrations marking 136 years of existence of the Liberia YMCA is an empowerment for young people.
In special remarks, the National General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Liberia YMCA, E. Timotheus Kamaboakia said the 136 anniversary celebration of the YMCA is not only for the institution, but for all.
“I take pride in the fact that you can identify with us as we celebrate 136 years.” The YMCA CEO said.
Mr. Kamaboakai told the gathering, that as the Liberia YMCA is committed to providing services to young people, he wants to see YMCA in all communities.
“In few years from now as the Liberia YMCA celebrates 150 years, we want the YMCA to be celebrated in all communities.
In this light as we work to achieve this goal, I call on you to join hands with us as we strive to ensure that the YMCA live and serve the community it was organized to serve.
Performing then launce of the 2017 Children vacation Basketball Sports Program, the Vice |Chairman for Program of the National Board, YMCA of Liberia, Pastor Gabriel Briamah thanked parents and participants for trusting the YMCA and also turning out to celebrate 136 years of existence.
“I thank you all for trusting and also partnering with the YMCA.” He said.
Mr. Briamah also said the YMCA wants the training of young people replicated in other areas of the country and thanked the YMCA for the manifestation that it is a community driven organization.
The Executive Director of the Monrovia YMCA, Mrs. Vonyee Newton Kolison thanked participants for attending the program and informed the gathering that the next Children vacation Sports Program launch will be held according to divisions under the program, where speakers will be invited to lecture the kids and engage and interact with them.
Appropriate programs were also held across all YMCA branches and program centers across the country to commemorate the day which included sports events.
The Liberia YMCA first started as a church-based organization and later spread to other parts of Liberia, especially the coastal counties, Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, Sinoe and Grand Bassa Counties. In 1926, the YMCA was extended to Monrovia, the capital city. Currently, the Liberia YMCA has branches and program centers in Montserrado, Kakata, Gbarnga, Ganta, Unification Town, Yekepa and Zorzor.
